WebP

Serve smaller images while keeping original uploads

What is WebP?

WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that employs both lossy and lossless compression methods. It is designed to provide high-quality images with smaller file sizes compared to other popular image formats like JPEG and PNG.

The adoption of WebP can lead to faster web page loading times and reduced bandwidth usage, which is particularly important for users with slower internet connections or limited data plans.

How do I enable WebP?

The WebP control is under Setting → General → External Tools → webp. The image optimizer also needs external image binaries, including cwebp, available to the web-server user.

Keep “Make webp of all uploaded images” off. In the current release this option doesn't produce real WebP files: the optimizer saves an optimized JPEG or PNG under a .webp name, and installing the binaries doesn't change that. Your images are served in their original format either way, so leaving it off loses nothing.
