Automation

Automation

Scheduled jobs that keep pulling content in

You can automate content population in RKHM. Certain plugins give you various ways to do it

Music automation

Spotify's Web API + YouTube's Data API ( or YouTube scrapper tool ) + YouTube's Embedded Player can be combined to fully automate  music content generation free of any charge.

Additionally, RKHM can use SoundCloud as a source instead of YouTube!

How does it work?

In short, script will get artist/track/album data from Spotify. Upon play request, script will search YouTube for the track, record it in database so it's not done again for a while and plays the YouTube video for the user

How to setup?

You need to do all the following

  1. Spotify: Create a Spotify developer app and enter its Client ID and Client Secret under Content → Music → Automation → Spotify. Spotify currently requires the app owner to have Premium for Development Mode; that mode is intended for learning and personal, non-commercial use. Check Spotify’s current access terms before relying on it for a public service. See our Spotify changes guide.
  2. YouTube: Enable YouTube Data API v3 in Google Cloud, create an API key, and enter it under Content → Music → Automation → YouTube. Google applies quotas and usage policies; review them before enabling automation. The optional YouTube Scrapper tool works without an API key; like every scraper, using it is only legal for research purposes and personal use.

There are 2 ways to pull data from Spotify

  1. Full Automation: Can be enabled by checking "Automated content" in "RKHM admin-area -> Content -> Music -> Automation -> Spotify". This will essentially combine your app's results with Spotify's on the go as users navigate your app. For example, when a user searches your app, script will search Spotify and combine your search results. Anything that exists on Spotify can be found on your platform. Downside of full automation is speed. Script has to contact Spotify's API server before answering user's request which can make your app a little or a lot slower depending on server's resources and speed. Full automation adds layers and layers API requests which we have tried to reduce & cache as much as possible but still, it takes time
  2. Cronjobs: You can create "Music Cronjob" to pull data from Spotify on the background and 24/7 and present those data to users instead of contacting Spotify as users navigate. This will make your database bigger but increase your app's speed a lot compared to full automation

Review the current Spotify and YouTube developer terms before using their data or players in your app. Paying for an API plan or displaying attribution does not by itself grant every use right.

Podcast automation

Podcasts usually offer an RSS url, containing information about podcast & episode list. Podcasters want to share their artwork to different devices/platforms by this url. There are many apps that can import a whole podcast from a simple RSS url and you might already know a few of them

We maintain a large, growing catalogue of podcast RSS feeds on our API server. Any RKHM with a valid license can sync with it and import the podcasts you choose; the Automation page shows the queue status while it imports.

How to setup?

Go to Content → Podcast → Automation, tick Sync Podcasts in the Busyowl group, and use the filters on the same page to import only what you want.

Every podcaster, sharing platform has their own rules but mostly they are okay with it as long as you don't download the podcast to your own server and load it from there. Logically, when you make an RSS feed URL for your content, you want it to be used & shared. You can also change script config to give credits & a link to podcasts website

Radio automation

Online radios usually have a website or a web page. We have collected the streaming URLs and details of a large catalogue of online stations. Any RKHM with a valid license can sync with our API server to import them.

How to setup?

Go to Content → Radio → Automation, tick Sync Stations, and use the filters on the same page to import only what you want. See Radio automation.

Every stations might have their own rules, but online radios usually get paid by their streaming count so they should be ok with it. You can also change script config to give credits & a link to radio station's website

Audiobook automation

LibriVox volunteers record public-domain books. We have indexed a large catalogue of LibriVox audiobooks, with covers and author details from other public-domain sources, and any RKHM with a valid license can sync with our API server to import them.

How to setup?

Go to Content → Audiobook → Automation, tick Sync Audiobooks, and use the filters on the same page to import only what you want. See Audiobook automation.

LibriVox recordings are in the public domain in the USA. If you operate outside the USA, check that the books you import are also in the public domain in your country — LibriVox gives the same advice.
